Non-Slip Aggregates
General
A range of special aggregates to use with coating systems. Graded as follows:
- Grade No.4 - This is the most coarse Grade available and can only be used with the heavier paint systems ie. Episol solvent free floor paint. The main area of use would be on vehicle ramps to car ferries, ships decks etc. where you would require exceptional grip. These areas are normally subject to very hard wear in extreme weather conditions. The grit provides a rugged profile and should be cast in to the tacky surface of the Episol and allowed to dry then encapsulated when dry. Can also be used with Coal Tar Epoxy Coating in marine environments on to steelwork and decking where positive grip and chemical resistance is required i.e. in oil refineries and drilling platforms etc.
- Grade No.5 - A medium coarse Grade which has a wide application. It can be used with all our Epoxy floor finishes including Episol and Quickfloor. It is ideal for steps, ramps, steel walkways and simulated climbing structures in sports halls etc. Both application methods can be used. Care should be taken when using both Grade 4 and 5 to avoid areas where children are likely to play as falling on to the resultant profile could cause severe abrasion and laceration to the skin.
- Grade No.6 - This is the most popular Grade used with all our floorpaint systems. Obvious applications would be on floors which are constantly slippery i.e. spillage of water, oils etc. Garages, hospitals, warehouses and around the home. The Grade is easily encapsulated within the paint to give long term protection and unlike the coarser Grades provides a surface which is easier to keep clean.
- Grade No.7 - The finest of all the Grades available, this is ideal for use where a background grip is required without the surface feeling too rough. It is ideal where floors have to be kept clean yet need to have a degree of grip i.e. play and sports surfaces, factory isles, animal pens, boat decks etc. The advantage with the fine Grade is that it is easy to add to the paint putting in as much or as little as is required, it can also be encapsulated if need be.
Preparation and Application
Decide which of the Grades is the most suitable for the paint you have chosen. Always paint on to primed or previously painted, sound, clean and dry surfaces. Ensure any holes, cracks etc in the floor are filled. On steel surfaces, make sure any rust has been treated with our Polybond Rust Converter or primer.
Sandwich Method (Applicable to all Grades)
Apply a generous coat of paint on to a 'manageable' area and before this has become tacky, cast the aggregate evenly in to the wet paint in excess ensuring that the whole surface has been covered. Brush away surplus grit at the edges and repeat the application until the whole floor has been treated. Leave the coating overnight then carefully brush or hoover up surplus grit. Finally encapsulate the exposed grit surface with one or two coats of paint.
Loading Method - (Only applicable to Grades 6 and 7)
Ensure surfaces have been filled and primed. Stir paint thoroughly and ensure two pack products are properly mixed. Add approximately 2 - 3 kilos of grit slowly in to a 5 litre of paint until it has been evenly dispersed. Then apply evenly and generously to the surface. (Overloading will make the paint unbrushable so care should be taken to add the grit slowly, testing the finish as you go).
Note : Remember that when using non-slip aggregates the coverage rates of the paints used will be considerably reduced, by as much as 60% in the case of the No. 5 & 4 grits. So allow for this when ordering.
Making an Epoxy Floor Filler
Loading our Episol Solvent Free Epoxy Product with the No. 6 Aggregate can produce an excellent Epoxy Floor Filler. Simply follow the loading method but increase the amount of grit added until you reach a stiff, trowelable consistency the use as a filler. The mix will flow easily and should 'self level' resulting in an exceptionally tough, durable repair which can be done in different colours.
