New Concrete : Laitence, mould release oils and dirt must be removed by scrubbing the surface with dilute Hydrochloric Acid or Acron Concrete Cleaner. This process removes various insoluble salts and neutralizes the concrete surface from alkalis. Wash down thoroughly with fresh water and allow to dry completely.
Painted Concrete : After draining down remove all areas of loose paint and scrape back to a firm edge looking carefully at old paint behind which water may be trapped. Any damaged area of concrete or render should be hacked back and made good followed by patch priming and treating as new concrete. Cracks and voids should be filled with a cement based filler. The remaining paintwork should be scrubbed with a detergent solution or sugar soap to remove all surface contamination including body fats which collect at the water line. Glossy surfaces should be abraded to a matt finish. Wash with fresh water and leave to dry completely.
Please contact our Technical Department for further details. Swimming Pool Paint is not recommended for use on G.R.P., Marblelite or Marbeline pools, nor small fish ponds. Please refer to our technical department about the painting of these surfaces as other specialist coatings in our range could be suitable. Match the batch numbers on all paints purchased to ensure continuity of colour and re-order reference.
New Concrete and Porous Surfaces
A three coat system is recommended as follows:
Stir thoroughly before use. Dilute the paint with approximately 10% of Acron Universal Thinners and use as a priming coat. Apply this with a brush or soft broom to get maximun penetration. After 24 hours, apply a full bodied coat. Wait a further 24 hours then apply a final coat to finish. Apply the paint using a brush, roller or spray. For brush application use a medium / soft brush. A soft broom can be used on the base of the pool. Do not work the paint too vigorously into previous coats. Use a short piled roller and avoid overworking the paint which can produce bubbles. Thinning may be necessary. Paint corners and joints etc. with a brush. For spray application, allow 6 hours drying between coats. Be careful of overspray. Always wear a mask and appropriate safety equipment. Thinning is required. No slip additives may be applied to the base of the pool and steps etc. These are normally applied in excess to the wet paint removing the surplus when dry and overcoating to finish.
Painted Concrete
Most previously painted pools can be overcoated with Polybond Swimming Pool Paint, however if in doubt about an old painted surface, it is advisable to apply a patch to the old paint below the existing waterline or on the bottom of the empty pool. The patch must then be immersed in water for at least a week. If there is bubbling of the paint or pin holing* occurs then the old paint must be removed back to a sound substrate.
