1. Identification of Substance

   Zinc Rich Primer for application onto virgin steel and iron.

2. Composition/Information on Ingredients

   This product is comprised of synthetic alkyd resins, which are thinned with aromatic and aliphatic solvents. The mix is blended with organic and in-organic pigments, zinc Neutral and extenders. Some colours may contain lead based pigments.

3. Hazards Identification

   Under the 'Classification, Packaging and Labelling of Dangerous Substances Regulations 1984', this product is classed as "Harmful". The Health and Safety Commission has established occupational exposure limits (OEL), which are shown below and must always be adhered to.

4. First Aid Measures

   General

   In all cases of doubt or when symptoms persist, seek medical attention. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.

   Inhalation

   Remove victim immediately from source of exposure. Move the exposed person to fresh air at once. When breathing is difficult, properly trained personnel may assist affected person by administering 100% oxygen. Keep the affected person warm and at rest. Seek prompt medical attention.

   Ingestion

   Do not induce vomiting. Never make an unconscious person vomit or drink fluids. Remove victim immediately from source of exposure. Rinse mouth thoroughly. Provide rest, warmth and fresh air. Seek medical attention immediately.

   Skin

   Remove affected person from source of contamination. Remove contaminated clothing. Wash the skin immediately with soap and water. Seek medical attention promptly if symptoms occur after washing.

   Eyes

   Make sure to remove any contact lenses from the eyes before rinsing. Continue to rinse for at least 15 minutes. Contact physician if irritation persists. Get medical attention promptly if symptoms occur after washing.

5. Fire Fighting Measures

   As noted under 'Storage', this product should be stored and used in well-ventilated areas. Additional means should be used if the natural ventilation is insufficient. Exclusion of all naked lights, unprotected electrical equipment and other sources of ignition from the vicinity in which the product will be used, is essential and should be maintained while product is drying. Spontaneous combustion may occur where contaminated rags etc are permitted to accumulate. Regular removal of waste materials will minimise this risk. If the product ignites, the ensuing fire will product dense black smoke containing harmful products of combustion. Foam or dry powder extinguishers should be used. Any containers exposed to fire should be kept cool using water spray to avoid their combustion.

6. Accidental Release Measures

   Exclude sources of ignition and ventilate area. Exclude non-essential personnel. Avoid breathing vapours. Refer to protective measures listed in sections 7 and 8. Contain and collect spillages with non-combustible absorbent materials e.g. sand, earth and place in a suitable container for disposal in accordance with waste regulations. Do not allow to enter drains or water courses. Should this occur, the local Water Company should be contacted immediately in case of contamination of streams, rivers or lakes the national rivers authority. Clean preferably with a detergent avoid use of solvents.

7. Handling and Storage

   Handling

   Inhalation of vapour, particles and spray mist should be avoided. This can be aided by ensuring that ventilation is at a maximum. If ventilation is not sufficient to keep vapour below the OEL, respiratory protection must be worn. Protective clothing to BS2092 is essential to avoid contact with the skin and eyes. In the absence of full protective clothing, barrier creams may help to protect exposed areas.

   Storage

   The use and storage of Zinc Rich Primer is subject to the specifications of the Highly Flammable Liquids and Liquefied Gases Regulations 1972. Up to 50 litres may be stored in a workroom if it is kept in a fireproof cupboard or bin. Larger quantities must be stored in a separate room according to the regulation noted above. The product must be kept in a cool, dry and ventilated area away from sources of ignition. They must be out of the reach of children and snoking should not be permitted within the vicinity.

8. Exposure Controls and Personal Protection

   Engineering Measures

   Provide adequate ventilation. Where reasonably practicable, this should be achieved by the use of local exhaust ventilation and good general extraction. If extraction methods are insufficient to maintain concentrations of particles and/or solvent vapours below relevant OEL's suitable respiratory protective equipment should be worn.

   Occupational Exposure Standard. OEL's are from EH40 except where marked SUP which are assigned by the supplier of the substance.

   General Protection

   All ppe, including rpe, used to control exposure to hazardous substances must be selected to meet the requirements of the COSHH regulations.

   Respiratory Protection

   Air fed respiratory equipment should be worn when sprayed if levels cannot be controlled to below OEL's and engineering methods cannot reasonably be improved.

   Hand Protection

   Full physical protection is best. Seek relevant advice from glove manufacturers. Barrier cream may be of help, but it should not be applied after exposure has occurred.

   Eye Protection

   Eye protection designed to protect against liquid splashes should be worn.

   Skin Protection

   Cotton or cotton/synthetic overalls or coveralls are normally suitable. Grossly contaminated clothing should be removed and the skin washed with soap and water or a proprietary skin cleaner.

10. Stability and Reactivity

    Stable under the recommended storage and handling conditions (See section 7). In a fire, hazardous decomposition products such as smoke, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and oxides of nitrogen may be produced. Keep away from oxidising agents and strong alkaline and acid materials to prevent the possibility of an exothermic reaction.

11. Toxicology Information

    In general, exposure to solvent vapours can affect the health of an operative with results such as irritation to the mucous membrane and respiratory system and adverse effects to the renal and central nervous systems. Symptoms can include headaches, dizziness, fatigue, muscular weakness and even unconsciousness. Repeated or prolonged exposure may lead to dermatitis.

12. Ecological Information

    There is no data available on the product itself. The product should not be allowed to enter drains or water courses or be deposited where it can affect ground or surface waters. The Air Pollution Control requirements of regulations made under the Environmental Protection Act may apply to the use of this product.

13. Disposal Considerations

    Do not allow into drains or water courses or dispose of where ground or surface waters may be affected. Wastes including emptied containers are controlled wastes and should be disposed of in accordance with regulations made under the Control of Pollutions and Environmental Protection Acts.
